Piling

My desk is a mess. There are always piles of paper everywhere. Thus, it is pretty natural, given what I do for a living, to think about how this translates to the digital world and how to replicate a similar experience, what Donald Norman calls a "pile cabinet." I'd been even thinking about doing my grad school thesis and project on it. Of course, the good people at Apple, headed up by Gitta Solomon have already done quite a bit of research (pdf) on the matter and even hold a patent on the idea. And now there's rumors it'll be included in Mac OS X 10.3.
